The story of an 18 year old genocide survivor from Rwanda.

Janvier’s story focuses on the importance of the manure from his cow and the bumper harvest of vegetables that comes from his healthy soils. He lives with his brothers and sisters as an orphan headed household.

Bag Gardens are a type of African garden that Send a Cow teaches families how to make in Africa. Cabbages and Cowpats DVD (+Welsh)
A fun DVD about Africa and Send a Cow

Our ‘Cabbages and Cowpats’ DVD has been produced for primary schools and group use. It features short films about children’s lives in Lesotho, African gardens and Send a Cow’s work in Africa. The DVD is strong on promoting sustainability and healthy eating, it’s accompanied by toe-tapping music, engaging animations and an easy-to-follow storyline - much of it has a Welsh language option. Free stickers
Order some stickers for your kids

We have four different types of sticker sheets that you can order for your class, group or event if you are supporting Send a Cow in some way. They have been tested on kids… and they love them!
The ‘T1’ sheet has enough stickers for a class of 30.
The ‘T2’ is reward sheet with fun graphics such as ‘eggcellent work’.
The ‘K1’ sheet has small and large round stickers - good for groups.
And the ‘K2’ sheet is our cool Cowforce sheet with lots of different designs on it.

Helping Berna
Explores comparisons, basic needs and different ways to help people.

A collection of three lessons, an assembly and a fun classroom game, all written for the PSHE curriculum and Citizenship QCA Unit 5 - Living in a diverse world. These activities help pupils to understand what life is like for a Ugandan orphan, how it compares to their own lives and looks at different ways of helping people.

As well as Cabbages and Cowpats, we also have some free DVDs that are suitable for older pupils or to help enthuse staff about Send a Cow’s work. There are three to choose from: Organic Farming in Eastern Uganda, how people, land and animals live in harmony; our Rwanda DVD, about life for genocide survivors and our Lesotho & Ethiopia DVD, highlighting different approaches, like keyhole gardens, used when working in upland areas. A way to focus learning from the DVD

These questions can be a good way to guide learning from the DVD, enabling you to show the clips several times to deepen learning (preview the Life in Lesotho and the Keyhole Gardens video clips). Karabo’s life information boxes (+Welsh)
Background info on Karabo from Lesotho

These information boxes give insights into nine year old Karabo’s life, they can be cut up and handed out to table groups to discuss the questions are posed on each one. The boxes can also be used to promote discussion on their own, alongside the Cabbages and Cowpats DVD (preview the Life in Lesotho video clip) or Karabo’s life in Lesotho Powerpoint.

Questions and pictures exploring life in Lesotho

This Powerpoint invites pupils to look at similarities and differences between their lives and that of Karabo from Lesotho. Her day can be seen in full on the Cabbages and Cowpats DVD.Cabbages and Cowpats DVD. These slides show several pictures from her everyday life, including her home, school and doing jobs and a series of questions are posed to get children thinking. This resource can act as a good starting point for discussion and is linked to other resources about Karabo’s life.

Read to Feed fundraising
Encourage reading and raise money for children in Africa

Read to Feed is a great way to both get your pupils reading more and raising money for children in Africa through Send a Cow. Not only that, the books that they read can be linked to learning about Africa and the environment. The pack contains all you need to get your class going: bookmarks with stickers to keep children focussed, sponsorship forms and certificates to reward them. You can order a pack in the Order and sign up page., but to keep our costs down we ask that you please only order if you are definitely going to use it.
