The story of an 18 year old genocide survivor from Rwanda.

Janvier’s story focuses on the importance of the manure from his cow and the bumper harvest of vegetables that comes from his healthy soils. He lives with his brothers and sisters as an orphan headed household.

This photo pack has twenty sheets of images with questions and links to information on the reverse. The pictures are of farming, gardens and of food being grown, stored and processed. They are great for any Africa topic work and especially if you are looking at food, farming and climate change with your pupils. African recipes
Simple but tasty African dishes to try out!

These recipes will spice up your learning about African countries and have been chosen as most are fairly easy to make. Types of food eaten across Africa varies greatly and is partly dependant on access to different ingredients. Often poor families will have to survive on a diet of beans and rice, but when money starts coming into a household and more food is grown, children’s diets become more varied, healthy. . . and tasty! Use the food images gallery to set the scene before you get cooking.

Mpho’s story (+Welsh)
Mpho is a four year old boy from Lesotho

Mpho lives with his mum and grandma, Mametseliso. Their story shows how Send a Cow training in natural farming methods can supply whole communities with the means to grow healthy food. A great case study if you are looking at the importance of healthy eating and/or growing plants and vegetables. The .kmz file is a short Google Earth Tour showing where Mpho lives (click on it if you have Google Earth, then click on the sub-folder and play.) There are various resources linked to this story mainly around using his keyhole garden and what he eats in, Mpho’s food miles and 5 a day with Mpho.

An activity comparing access to food

This lunchtime shopping list price comparison between the UK and Uganda can be used to introduce pupils to the global inequalities in access to food. Pupils take on the challenge of buying items for fictional families, with varying resources. The lesson fits well into the Geography curriculum - comparing life in an LEDC with an MEDC.

This lesson plan focuses on where the food we eat comes from and the concept of ‘food miles’. It uses the story of Mpho - a four year old boy from Lesotho, who eats vegetables grown in his family’s Keyhole Garden. Where his food is grown is compared to where pupils get their food from, in the activity. It links well to QCA Geography Unit 8 - ‘Connecting ourselves to the world’. These two lessons fulfill the curriculum requirement to teach about food groups through reference to the story of a four year old boy from Lesotho called Mpho. They are part global Citizenship and part Science and encourage children to think about healthy eating and specifically the goal of eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day - fitting into QCA - Teeth and eating and other areas in Science.
