Keyhole Gardens in action (+Welsh)
Shows a garden being used and one being made

One of these colourful Powerpoints is from a school in Lesotho who made a Keyhole Garden to provide food for their school dinners. This can also be seen on the Cabbages and Cowpats DVD (preview using YouTube link below). The other shows how Mpho helps his grandma with their garden and benefits from the healthy food. The slides could also be printed and used as display material. For more information for Welsh schools wanting to partner with a Lesothan school, visit the Dolen Cymru website.

Mpho’s story (+Welsh)
Mpho is a four year old boy from Lesotho

Mpho lives with his mum and grandma, Mametseliso. Their story shows how Send a Cow training in natural farming methods can supply whole communities with the means to grow healthy food. A great case study if you are looking at the importance of healthy eating and/or growing plants and vegetables. The .kmz file is a short Google Earth Tour showing where Mpho lives (click on it if you have Google Earth, then click on the sub-folder and play.) There are various resources linked to this story mainly around using his keyhole garden and what he eats in, Mpho’s food miles and 5 a day with Mpho. Mpho’s food miles (+Welsh)
Comparing where children's food comes from

This lesson plan focuses on where the food we eat comes from and the concept of ‘food miles’. It uses the story of Mpho - a four year old boy from Lesotho, who eats vegetables grown in his family’s Keyhole Garden. Where his food is grown is compared to where pupils get their food from, in the activity. It links well to QCA Geography Unit 8 - ‘Connecting ourselves to the world’. The .kmz file is a short Google Earth Tour showing where Mpho lives (click on it if you have Google Earth, then click on the sub-folder and play.)

5 a day with Mpho (+Welsh)
Healthy eating lessons from Africa

These two lessons fulfill the curriculum requirement to teach about food groups through reference to the story of a four year old boy from Lesotho called Mpho. They are part global Citizenship and part Science and encourage children to think about healthy eating and specifically the goal of eating five portions of fruit and vegetables a day - fitting into QCA - Teeth and eating and other areas in Science.
